DAPPLED CITIES @ JIVE 03.09.2009 & CANNIBAL CORPSE @ FOWLERS 11.09.2009

There has been a lot going on for me the last few weeks, combine that with the fact that I am a fantastic procrastinator and you come up with the reason why I haven't blogged about the last two gigs I have shot! No real reason at all!

First up I had one of my favourite Australian bands, Dappled Cities. Such a fun show, as theirs usually are - Dapples played Jive with The Philadelphia Grand Jury. Touring for their new album 'Zounds' it seemed a little
strange to me that they were playing a smaller venue than their last gig in adelaide, but it didn't really matter to the crowd or the band. I just adore the vibe that Dapples bring to their shows, its all about dancing and having a good time. It was a nice touch showing some of their Alphabreaks videos before the encore. If you haven't seen any of them, they are short videos for kids, working through every letter of the alphabet, and singing about a musical instrument that starts with that letter. Very cute. To end the night the boys came out on stage for their encore dressed in jumpsuits covered in xmas lights! It was fantastic, and totally unexpected.

About a week later, and I am facing the daunting task of trying to get to the front of stage for a Cannibal Corpse gig at Fowlers, which has no barrier, and is due to start in 20 minutes. The crowd were actually fine, except for the flailing heads of hair, but that was nothing to really worry about. I managed to work my way to the side of stage, right next to a security guard, there was some little step thing that I ended up sitting on resting my arms on the stage to try and get some balance. There were a lot of issues facing me at this gig. I only bought along my 50mm f1.8 lens, as I know from shooting Fowlers before, the lighting is always crap, and my other lens (f3/5 - 5.6 wouldn't cut it). But in doing this, I was WAY too limited in what I could shoot from my vantage point. I was basically sitting right underneath a guitarist, and couldn't get a shot of him because I didn't have the ability to go any wider with my lens. As it was I still had trouble getting any decent shots with my f1.8 I don't know how I can get past the d.o.f. issues that plagued me at Dapples when I need to shoot low light. I must not have my set up quite right. I know what I do need is a better lens, and I am looking to the Sigma 24 - 70mm f2.8. Soon my pretty. Anyway, I hung around for what I think was three songs (I lose track when I am shooting at the best of times, let alone when the songs all seem to sound the same to me anyway), and then we kinda scooted out of there and left them too it.

In the next few months I am looking at shooting Sarah Blasko, The Buzzcocks, Karnivool and Jeff Martin, if confirmations come through, and I am very much looking forward to all of them!
