PARKWAY DRIVE @ THEBARTON THEATRE 20.08.2009

So I turn up to shoot the Parkway Drive gig at Thebarton Theatre on Thursday night for Metal Obsession. As it is my first time shooting there I do the right thing and think "I will get there early so I can get some practice shots in on some of the support bands" - wow, was some sensible fore-thought a really bad idea that night!

The doors open and I sit back and watch the long queue work its way in, around twenty past seven I head up to the desk and introduce myself, only to discover that sorry you aren't allowed to shoot the supports, only the main act. Firstly, why? Surely the support acts would like some exposure too? Secondly, crap! I got dropped off at the venue because I didn't want to have to walk forever with my gear late at night. So this meant I had to sit out the front of the venue until 9:30pm, on my own, in the cold. Yeah, it was a fun night.

Once I was allowed in, just after the last support had finished, I made my way to the front and was the only photographer up there. As the time got closer to 10pm (the start time for Parkway Drive) there were still no other photographers, and then the gig started and I was still on my own! I know there were others down to shoot, but I don't know what happened to them. It was a little daunting shooting at Thebbie for the first time anyway, and having the whole pit to myself, except for the security guards of course, was kinda crazy!

Shooting the gig was fun. I really need a 24-70mm f2.8 or a 70-200mm f2.8 lens though. The light was really hard, because the stage is bigger the back lights etc were further from the band, and I have quite a few shots were their faces are just too dark due to back lighting. Got some shots that I am happy with, learned some more stuff (which is really the point isn't it - have fun, learn more about how to get better shots) and I was home, with a cup of tea by about 11pm.
